Impro Theatre “Adds” to the Bard’s Comedy Canon
With “SHAKESPEARE UNSCRIPTED,”
Premiering June 26 at Theatre of the Arts
Los Angeles — For those who yearn for more than just the 16 comedies William Shakespeare
wrote (17, if counting “Two Noble Kinsmen”), the wait is over … so to speak, when Impro
Theatre presents all-new, improvised plays in the spirit of the Bard in “Shakespeare
UnScripted,” beginning Friday, June 26, at Theatre of the Arts.
Using only their guts, wits and a few suggestions from the audience to kick off the show,
Impro Theatre attempts to “ascend the brightest heaven of invention” and create a completely
original and entertaining story for each performance. Monarchs, spirits, warriors, lovers, fools
or clowns — no one knows what role he, or she, may be asked to play when stepping out to
improvise.
Originally directed by Brian Lohmann and Dan O’Connor — both of whom will again
direct — at the Globe Playhouse in Los Angeles, “Shakespeare UnScripted” has received
standing ovations in Chicago, Austin, New York City and Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
“Shakespeare UnScripted” features Tracy Burns, Brian Jones, Stephen Kearin, Brian
Lohmann, Nick Massouh, Jo McGinley, Dan O’Connor, Paul Rogan, Michele Spears and Floyd
Van Buskirk, with guest artists Lauren Lewis, Carla Rosati, Jennifer Riege and Mollie Taxe.
Jim Sabo and Ruben Vernier are light and sound improvisers.
Produced by Impro Theatre and Theatre/Theater, “Shakespeare UnScripted” will play
Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through Aug. 1. Tickets are $20 each and can be reserved by
calling 800-838-3006, or online: brownpapertickets.com. Running time is approximately 110
minutes, including intermission.
