The AIN conference in Banff was an epiphany for me. I'm constantly surprised at how activities that don't involve words feel so much more effective.

Learning 2008

Posted on October 27, 2008 at 1:22pm 1 Comment

I"m at Learning 2008 in Orlando, Florida. I was a bit worried about coming here after the AIN conference but it's all turning out well. Many thought leaders in the area of learning. So far heard from an animal behaviorist about using positive reinforcement and how to change negative behavior by ignoring it. There was a suggestion given that if your partner stands to close while you're cooking, you should put beer and chips on a counter where you'd prefer they stand. Went to an hour long second… Continue

I agree that trust is the central issue that is very hard to obtain. One source I like is about developing swift trust (in temporary groups). It's still pretty theoretical, but a good eye-opener nontheless. You can find it here: http://books.google.nl/books?hl=nl&lr=&id=A_8LbcsgrNMC&oi=fnd&pg=PA166&dq=trust+improvisation&ots=VoE9Fu0kxa&sig=4UyDZjXCMs_tGzEMrAF_PMzWGbA#v=onepage&q=trust%20improvisation&f=false. Pages 181-183  are a nice summary.

As far as practical research, I'm doing several things, and just try to use AI principles in order to learn more about them. For example, I've developed a day where a group of total strangers will come together and start an organization (that is supposed to have lasting impact) in 1 day. I've done a trial last summer and the first real day will be next friday.

Hi Cheryl,

I still owe you a response. Currently, I'm also keeping my eyes open for grants, but for now I've decided to do just a little academic research and focus on practical research instead. Perhaps you can persuade one or two libraries to inititate the change you are taling about, maybe with some other AIN memebers to back you up.

Have you made any advances in the meantime?

Hi Cheryl,

I'll try to add interesting material to the knowledge database that you can find at to the right and above the comments on the BRAIN group.

I don't know specific project aimed at improv and work environment, but I'll keep it in mind. What kind of partner are you looking for to help you pursue the grant?

I wanted to say that I thought your idea of "learned helplessness" in organizations is a brilliant connection... better than peanut butter and chocolate.
