Hey Jerry!
Thanks for the response to my blog post. I hear you're a former Smarty Pants-er. That's fantastic! I'm currently part of the troupe, too. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. -Briana

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the prompt and warm welcome! I am thrilled to be abroad, er... aBOARD! (Sorry - long day so far and that started out as a typo...). I am all ears to accept any other advice you may have. I'm just getting the hang of this e-conferencing etc...

A couple of those photos looked suspiciously like Banff - what did you think of the place? My family shares a place in Canmore, located about 20 minutes west on the main highway. It's much less crowded and equally beautiful. Those mountains are something else, aren't they? Sounds like you enjoyed the conference. I'm choked that I found out about your group AFTER it was over D-oh!

I'm thinking of changing my photo - I actually do have a forehead & hair. what say you?

Thanks for writing!

After the 26th sounds good. I don't think I will be up your way before then. Just let me know when you have a date in mind. I have been kicking around some of the ideas we talked about for a regional meeting. Excited to bounce them off of ya, and see what you think. :)

Thanks for the add. Where do you live? Do you live past "the big Jesus" on 75? I would love to meet up and exchange ideas. I am always up that way working with schools, theatres, etc. In fact, I am speaking up there this Saturday. So I hope we can meet one day soon!
Thanks again!

Effective human interaction comprises equal parts "making offers" and "accepting offers." "Making offers" = asserting your needs & opinions, moving the action in a useful direction, telling the other what you want. "Accepting offers" = listening, following, approaching others with a spirit of curiosity and inquiry, asking the other what s/he wants.

Boom Boom - Out Go the Lights!

In my previous post, I described the theories of the late traffic engineer Hans Monderman, “the guy who hated traffic signs.” Monderman believed that signs and other traffic-control devices serve to shield drivers from their own sense of their surroundings and make them less alert to sudden unfolding situations. Based on these ideas, Monderman created the concept of “shared spaces” in which drivers and pedestrians can coexist with a minimum of external controls.

You may be wondering what it wou… Continue

The Daily Improviser Hits the Road (and Shares the Space)!

(The following is a recent post from my blog THE DAILY IMPROVISER, http://the-daily-improviser.blogspot.com/ )

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign / Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind"
"Signs," by The Five Man Electrical Band

Today I’d like to introduce you to Jake Straw, a man who, when confronted with the very idea of improv theater, is guaranteed to say:

What? Throw away the script? Have the actors interact with the audience and let them drive the scene? Give up controlContinue

The Three Laws of Performance - The Improv Connection (Part 1)

(The following is an entry from my blog THE DAILY IMPROVISER - http://the-daily-improviser.blogspot.com/ )

I admit it: There are times when I wonder if my quest to build bridges between the worlds of improv and Organizational/Human Development isn’t just a bit quixotic. And then the world drops a connection into my lap that encourages me to keep tilting.

I had such an experience as I completed reading The Three Laws of Performance, by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan. In the n… Continue

The Three Laws of Performance

(The following is the latest entry in my blog THE DAILY IMPROVISER: Improvising in Business and Life. http://the-daily-improviser.blogspot.com/ )

Improvisational theory is deeply ingrained (even if not always so acknowledged) in the current thinking about the best ways to maximize organizational performance. A recent book titled The Three Laws of Performance, by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan, continues spinning this implicit thread of connections between the improv stage and the wo… Continue

Learning Improv from Someone Who Couldn’t Ad Lib a Belch after a Plate of Goulash

(Some thoughts upon reading an article about one of my comic heroes, Jack Benny.)

Jack Benny may not have been the funniest man in the world, but he was definitely in the top two (along with Groucho Marx). A classic Benny routine illustrates an important point about being an… Continue
