I have been working as an ecological researcher for the past 2 years and am preparing to return to Graduate School in the Fall. I will be studying the social dimensions of resource conservation and I believe that applied improv could be a useful tool towards that end. I am planning to do my masters research on creative means of facilitating Community Based Natural Resource Management projects in Malawi.

While serving in the Peace Corps in Malawi, I was exposed to the idea that "before we are ourselves, we are our relationships." In other words our social relations end up being much more important than many of us realize.

Hey John! Wow it's GREAT to see you here...hope you will be in Chattanooga to work with us and Keith Johnstone again...actually the work you are talking about is a great application of the philosophies of K.J....especially the work he does in understanding "status", in really being able to observe and respond to your partner..(remember the work on "inspiring your partner"?, on slowing down in scenes and understanding "whose scene is this?..right now it's his, that's alright, in a moment it can be yours"...how do the relationships alter in the scene? ) I especially love his dialogue about "What IS "Dramatic Action"? It's when one person alters another" and of course the idea that you have to allow yourself to BE altered...how does THAT work...oh yes...getting rid of the fear...hmmm...and we could go on and on...too much to go into here...we should certainly TALK! A big part of what you seem to be talking about would require some observation about what status is already in place...and of course having the participants being OPEN to the work..and then there's the FUN part, people are much more able to learn and willing to do so when there is laughter...when people are taken out of that serious and traditional "role"... there's so MUCH! Where do you START? Anywhere you can find inspiration...come to CHATTANOOGA in March!! March 9-15, 2009!!! ahhhhhh...so close and yet so far...you just have to DECIDE to COME !!!! We'll save you a SPOT!!!
