Hey Paul, I think your suggestion is great. Alas, my discretionary time will be almost non-existent until late April, so I can't help until the storm clears...

Though I had taken improv classes as a teenager, my first inkling of its potential was at a class I took when I was 26. One of the other students said, "I know this sounds hokey, but I've learned that improv is a lot like life." At the time, I didn't realize how true that was, but over the next few weeks of the class, I discovered a whole new way of looking at the world. My entire career since then has been shaped by those early discoveries.
More about you: (Short Bio or any other details you'd like people to know)
I am an independent scholar, collaborating with individuals and groups as a researcher, writer, educator, and facilitator. My doctoral research in organizational behavior at the University of Michigan's Business School focused on collaboration in new product development, but I have been interested in the intersection of improvisation, creativity, and human interaction ever since I took an improv theater course in 1995. My other recent research has examined how geographically distributed, multidisciplinary teams use technology and other strategies to collaborate successfully. Before moving to Michigan, I worked as an educational technology developer, graphic designer, and wildlife documentary production manager.

I would love to offer my skills and expertise in exchange for the opportunity to learn from the masterful educators and facilitators in AIN. Get in touch if you think a co-learning partnership might be appealing!

Even nuclear physicists are learning to improvise

The Wall Street Journal profiles an effort to teach physicists how to think on their feet. Charna Halpern is at CERN teaching improv classes. Read the September 4, 2008 article at:

Improv in Real Simple magazine

The August 2008 issue of Real Simple magazine has an article by life coach Gail Blanke titled "How to think on your feet" (pp. 143-149). Her three lessons learned from an improv class with the Upright Citizens Brigade are:

1. The "yes...and" technique
2. Go with your gut
3. Make everyone else in your group look good.

Living the moment

I just came across a sample chapter from a book titled The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die. The chapter is "live the moment." Seems particularly relevant for this crowd!

Hey Katherine,

Thanks for the offer of academic know-how. I think I'm OK for this semester, but I'll keep you in mind for the next one.

Also, I love on this comment thing, it says "Katherine is your friend." Yay!

Katherine, I'd love to take advantage of your "smart, academic, brilliant ears" - more than anything I think I need to think out loud and learn from your response. What grabs your attention? What strikes you as odd? What stands out for you? At some point in the next few weeks, if you have 30 minutes to listen to me ramble, I'd love you to coach me. If that might work, say yes. If you are swamped, say no! I'm so glad you came to Banff.
