Improv for me when I first started classes was a breath of fresh air. It was and continues to be an safe place where I am free to create and be accepted even with unfinished ideas. My epiphany was that I can do this and I love doing improv. Doors have opened since my first class.

I really appreciated the entire workshop, especially the thought to be wait, keep the mouth shut and notice more...and the next step in the scene will emerge. I felt like for the first time I had broken through truly into advanced improv, like the i…

Walking forward and/or walking forward backward?

I have a dilemma. Last night while reading the book, Impro, I came
across an insightful comment that I highlighted, "The improvisor (story
teller) has to be like a man walking backward. He sees where he has
been, but he pays no attention to the future. His story can take him
anywhere, but he must still 'balance' it, and give it shape, by
remembering incidents that have been shelved and reincorporating them."
Keith Johnstone's point is that great stories have interrelated ideas,
connected… Continue

Flat footed and on our toes

One of my improv teachers taught us that while waiting to be part of an improv scene, we all must stand with our weight forward, on the balls of our feet, ready for our opportunity to jump in. If we were to stand flat footed, or worse with the weight on our heels, we would be slow to respond to opportunities to enter a scene. Hyper awareness is a necessary reality for good improvisors and I think in life too.

As I consider my life and my work with organizations as an applied improv prac… Continue

improvised blog

"One, one, one." Mother Teresa answered when asked how she helped so many people in Calcutta. "I begin, you begin, one, one, one."

I begin this blog one word at a time. I have nothing profound to say, no insightful comment, no incredible insight, and that is refreshing and freeing to me. The pressure to be creative is not there. Instead I live into the reality that Keith Johnstone would say to his actors, "Be boring! Be average!" So here I am, an average guy with an average blog with a… Continue

Thanks Mike! Yes am safe and sound in my SF room..raring to get my biz idea off the ground. It was wonderful to share those AIN moments with you, from the beer & tater tot chats in the Power Station to that inspiring lightbulb moment you had in the CEO session. Keep me posted on using the notion of grace and service to inject inprov into your work!

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your offer. Looks like you and Jani (cool guy - was at Loose Moose with him) should share a lift. Will see how I'm feeling that night. Would you please email me your cell number for 'just in case'?

Best wishes,
Belina

Greetings Mike,
I was in the middle of a reply to you when I became distracted by the other blog post you had written. I hope you can come to IMPROVSTOCK with Keith Johnstone. Of course it's always a tricky area to tell someone what will happen to them when they take a course or workshop, but I can tell you MY experience of working with Keith....it was an utterly transforming experience. It's difficult to describe here, the difference between reading the words in a book and actually having the opportunity to have a discussion with Keith about these ideas, and to be in workshop where you can actually SEE and experience what he is talking about.

I don't have time right now to go into all of this...I am on a break from working on La Boheme, but I hope we'll have a chance to talk soon, or better yet, you should plan to come to chattanooga and study with Keith! We do have a few spots left...better hurry!
We have some folks from Los Angeles, Nashville, Atlanta, St. Louis MO, Woodstock GA, Huntington WV, and of course Chattanooga currently registered....sure hope you can join us. (We have a fairly good cross section of actors, directors, teachers, authors coming!)

off to rehearsal...

Mike, I was thinking about you and Robin and the improv and spirituality session you did at the conference. How much I liked it and think it would be cool to go around the country teaching workshops like that at places of faith or spirituality. Maybe it would be possible to do it, even if just for food and board. A travelling show. If I understand how to network with Faith based communities, I might just talk to you guys about trying it!

Thanks for the session, it endures.

Hi Mike,

Great to connect with you too! Hey, you're east coast-y and I'm looking for projects back in the US. If an opportunity pops up for us to collaborate - would you be up for that?

Best wishes,
Belina
