Very interesting question, Matt, and well put. (slipping comfortably through a trap door... wow!) I guess this one hangs over most our heads. What people do - I did, too - is assume a nickname for more sensitive (personal, political etc.) interac...

Hi all! My interest in Impro was triggered by Johnstone's work on status (the Seesaw) and its link with solution focussed coaching. I have been fascinated with the concept of status since I first read the Seesaw in 2006. Unfortunately, since then...

Hi, I am fascinated by the work he has done (like you?), too - did you read this interview with him, dated 2001: http://improvisation.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=5&Itemid=53 (it's pretty long and hard to read offscreen, I ...

The more subtle the status seesaw goes up and down, the more powerful it is.

"Most improvisation is by frightened people covering up their fear. They are afraid of failing; there is no good nature. This happens to most improvisation groups - so at the normal level of shit is frightened people, all trying to be good, and all trying to be the wittiest." (Keith Johnstone interviewed, http://improvisation.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogs...)

As a work psychologist and career counselor, Keith Johnstone's impro work on status interactions gave me a seductive first glimpse. The power and solutions I need, yet have so missed in most of the theoretical psych stuff, can emerge in working together cooperatively instead of competitively. Not in cramming more knowledge in our heads, trying to know best as an individual and convincing ('teaching') others.

Definitely the way forward for the human race! Improvisation skills help to empower a team, find that shared and real teamfocus and enable trust in self and others, feeling safe to experiment and fail. Of course, a strong shared goal is key, too.

I work in social services, and am developing my own business as a trainer/coach in the scarce freetime that is left after deducting mommy time! My firstborn son is just over a year old.

meeting people that share my fascination for the subtleties of powerful status transactions - how to help those emerge - in a training or workshop, or different setting? -, how to make room (a safe environment) for the sublety? what conditions apply, does that make it applicable only in certain (applied training) environments? when have you witnessed them emerging, which factors in that particular situation where essential in your opinion?

Also, I am very interested in the connection between Impro work and nonverbal skills, using your own body and the signals it gives you (haptonomie, bodywork). What (in a situation) enables you or others you may have witnessed to use that information optimally?

Jiskefet - inspiration for Dutch impro

I stumbled across this interview with Jiskefet's cocreator Kees Prins recently. Just wanted to share with the Dutch impro fans - very inspirational!

Sorry, it's in Dutch - Jiskefet was a very succesful dutch sitcom, that VPRO broadcast from 1990 to 2005, by three actors. Spawning many referral jokes and imitations at parties and cafes. In this interview, Kees Prins tells how they improvised all of it in front of a live aud… Continue

Hi Tess, welcome to the network! I totally agree on the challenge and the need to differentiate between Applied Improv and Theatresports.

Looking forward meeting you on the next AIN NL meeting.

regards,
Raymond
