Hey Alan.
In Holland (or maybe all over the world, too) we say; When one door closes, there always opens another, you just have to find out which one. Good luck with that.

Good luck Alan, I hope your improv-skills help you. As for advice: consider it an offer....
And I would say, if possibile, don't go for something you don't (really) want...too soon.

Ah...yes...what next? A great question....and a great place to post it.

I head a few business quotes recently about the economic world situation. These were from CIOs at a conference in Europe in November.

1. Don't waste a crisis.
2. All will cut, few will benefit. (cut refers to jobs and overhead I suppose)
3. It's a good idea to fix the roof when the sun is shining, but you really have clarity of purpose when it starts to rain.

Keep reaching out Alan...talk to you soon.

Tough moment probably.
Get on with small actions in the direction you want.
Build your networks - particularly this one, as it appears to be at a flourishing point.

Alan my dear - I'm sorry to hear the axe fell. And I'm glad you shared it with us. So what DO you do now? Hmmmmm - let's talk about what you know for sure. That might be a cool place to begin. Tag, you're it. Send me a note back when you feel like it. Love from Calgary - with a firm sense that this axe will bring with it opportunities, possibilities, some frustration and angst, and a lot of learning and joy.
